What's Wrong With The Gospel?

For those of you who don’t know, Keith Green was one of the most popular contemporary Christian artists during its early years and considered by many to be CCM’s “John the Baptist.” He was renowned for his honest and straightforward call for genuine repentance within the church and especially among his fellow musicians. One of the more unusual aspects of his career was the fact that towards the end he gave away his music for whatever people could afford. If they couldn’t afford to give money, then he gave it away for free (a principle which I personally tested with him when I ordered his “So You Wanna Go Back To Egypt?” album).

I had the pleasure of meeting him back in 1977 when he played at the Omni in Atlanta. A little known young artist was opening for him using tapes…her name was Amy Grant. We went up afterwards and I shook his hand. He had a look in his eyes that I’ll never forget. I’ve only seen it in a handful of Christians since then. It was like he wasn’t really seeing you at all…as if his focus was on a world that I couldn’t see.

Fortunately for Keith (but it sure seems like a loss to us), he went home to be with Jesus when he was killed in a small plane crash in 1982. He was only a Christian for seven short years, but he had an incredible impact on CCM which continues to this day.

I stumbled across some rare audio files of a series of teachings which Keith did called “What’s Wrong With The Gospel?” and I just had to share it with others. I hope that you take the time to listen and consider how these principles should be applied to your own approach to ministry.
